Beyond the Laptop: Adding DJ Hardware to Your Rig

Posted By — April 1, 2016

With the way music technology is going right now, DJ rigs seem to be getting smaller and smaller. While it would have been unfeasible to play a DJ set using only a laptop 15 years ago, today you could easily play a whole set using just an iPad. At the same time that some DJs are shrinking their rigs, however, others are looking for ways to expand them by adding DJ hardware equipment modeled after more traditional music making tools. If you’re looking for ways to get away from the laptop, here are a few pieces of DJ hardware to consider incorporating into your DJ rig.

Pad Controllers

A good pad controller is almost an essential piece of DJ hardware for serious DJs who want to add improvisation and live elements to their sets. Pad controllers come in all shapes and sizes, from portable controllers to huge flashing pads that could probably double as a light show. Some act as universal controllers, and others like Abelton’s Push controller are set up to work with specific pieces of software. Pad controllers are great creative tools because you can basically customize them to do whatever you want; not only [...]

What’s the Best DAW for DJs and EDM Producers?

Posted By — March 11, 2016

The technology behind DJing has changed a lot since those early days when DJs used to show up at gigs with a turntable and a giant crate of records. In addition to using a live performance software tool like Traktor or Serato, many DJs and EDM producers these days also use a digital audio workstation (DAW) to make beats and put mixes together. For modern DJs, a DAW has become almost an essential production tool, but the question is, which is the best DAW for DJs? If you’re just getting into the world of digital audio production, or looking to switch up your software, here’s our take on which DAW is the best DAW for DJs.

Ableton Live

Ableton is easily the most widely used DAW among electronic musicians, and for good reason. With its clip-based sequencing, Ableton is catered specifically to electronic musicians, and because it works just as well as a live performance tool as it does in the studio, DJs can use Ableton as their go-to software for all of their production needs. Ableton also comes in an “Intro” version for only $99 USD, but the full version will run you about $449 USD. (For [...]

DJ Marketing Strategies: Building Your Email List

Posted By — February 26, 2016

Social media is an unpredictable and ever-changing force in the world of entertainment today. Understanding House Music Subgenres

Posted By — February 12, 2016

What’s in a name? House music goes by a lot of different names these days – deep house, acid house, tech house, moombahton, Melbourne bounce, the list goes on… What exactly is the difference between all of these styles, and who actually cares? If you’re a beginner DJ, understanding all of these house music subgenres might seem like a waste of time, but if you want to know how to DJ house music like a pro, it’s important to know as much as you can about the music you’re playing. The more you understand these subgenres, the more you’ll be able to take on gigs feeling like an expert rather than a newbie. Plus, if you’re a house fan, exploring all of these subgenres could help you discover some really cool new music. With that in mind, let’s dive in to some of the most popular house music subgenres.

Classic (Chicago) House

Chicago house is where it all began. In the 1970s and 80s, in the aftermath of the disco era, a number of Chicago-based producers started developing a new type of electronic dance music characterized by a repetitive four-on-the-floor kick drum beat. This eventually gave rise to the [...]

How to Get DJ Gigs: 3 Reasons You’re Better Than a Playlist

Posted By — January 29, 2016

It seems like there’s a playlist for everything out there these days, from the best murder ballads to the best songs for 90’s bachelor pads. Thanks to streaming music services like Spotify and Songza, today’s music listeners are well-versed in the art of playlist browsing and playlist making. Pitchfork has even called playlists the “future of music.” So where does this proliferation of playlists leave DJs? Now that anyone can instantly find a playlist for any type of event, many DJs are left wondering how to get DJ gigs in this already competitive space. If you’re a good DJ, however, there should be no question that you’ll do a better job than a playlist. Here are 3 ways to set yourself apart as a DJ and prove to clients and venues that you’re worth hiring.

You’re a Human Being

The most important (and arguably most obvious) difference between you and a playlist is that you’re a human being, and as such, are capable of understanding human emotions and interacting with other human beings. A playlist doesn’t know how to read the energy in a room. A playlist can’t sort through song requests and separate the good [...]
